Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Description:

The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Clinic is comprised of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs), a Biomedical Technologist, and a Unit Clerk.

We provide:

  1. Assessment
  2. Recommendations based on clients’ communication needs/goals and abilities
  3. Device trials and prescription
  4. Customization and set-up
  5. Training for clients and caregivers
  6. Ongoing support for those who lease their communication system
  7. Virtual and in-person services

AAC solutions may include:

  1. Unaided approaches such as the use of facial expressions, eye-gaze, and gestures
  2. Low-technology devices such as alphabet/picture/word displays, and signaling aids
  3. High-technology devices such as computers that recognize or produce speech

Funding:

There is no fee charged for assessment or consultation for individuals with a valid Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card. The cost of purchasing or leasing an AAC system is the responsibility of the client (who may be eligible for Assistive Devices Program (ADP) funding).


Referral requirements:

In order to be seen by our clinic, the applicant must be an adult (18+ years of age) who:

Is a past or present patient of any West Park Healthcare Centre service and has a disability that impacts face-to-face and / or written communication

OR

Is an outpatient from anywhere in Ontario who has a congenital (from birth) physical disability that impacts face-to-face and/or written communication 

Please note that while we are able to offer virtual services, clients need to agree to come to the clinic when necessary.
